7 Foods We Should Never Keep in the Fridge

7 Foods We Should Never Keep in the Fridge

Not all foods that we think should be stored in the fridge are actually kept in the fridge. If you are in the habit of throwing all the fruit and vegetables as well as dairy products in the fridge, this article will make you ditch this habit immediately. Check out what foods we should never keep in the fridge to keep them whole, fresh and delicious. Make sure you avoid these food storage mistakes down the road.

1. Avocado

Most of us are guilty of storing avocados in the fridge, believing that they will survive another few days. Turns out, it is best to store avocados at room temperature to let them ripe and stay fresh. Unless your avocados are overly ripe, keep them in a bowl in the kitchen.

2. Basil

I was astonished to find out that storing basil in the fridge is a huge food storage mistake. Now I know the reason why my basil always wilted and looked as if I dried it with my hair dryer. If it sounds familiar to you, I have a small solution for you. Bring your basil back to life by keeping it in a mason jar or glass filled with fresh water on a window sill.

3. Watermelon

Perhaps you know that watermelon is jam-packed with powerful antioxidants, including lycopene and zeaxanthin. Storing a whole watermelon in the fridge for a long time destroys all those antioxidants, no matter how powerful they are. Unless your watermelon is sliced, never keep it in the fridge.

4. Coffee beans

This is insane, but I can name at least 15 people who store coffee grounds in the fridge to keep them fresh. I am not a huge coffee junkie, so I do not have a lot of coffee beans or grounds. Those I have, I store in the pantry, not the fridge. When stored in the fridge, coffee beans lose their freshness and flavor.

5. Tropical fruit

Pineapple, mango, kiwi, and other tropical fruit have complicated relationships with the cold. They love the warm temperatures, so do not place them into your fridge unless you slice them. This way, you will preserve all the nutrients and they will not stop ripening.

6. Sodium-filled sauces

Sodium-filled sauces, including hot sauce and soy sauce , can perfectly survive without the fridge. The thing is, they all contain salt that has been shown to fight bacteria and organisms that tend to spoil the food.

7. Garlic and onions

Garlic and onions do just fine without the fridge, but still many people keep committing this food storage mistake. Garlic and onions can freely relax and stay fresh for two months in the pantry. Just make sure you do not store them in the airtight containers, and keep them away from the potatoes.
There is always an exception to each rule, but when it comes to food, committing these seven food storage mistakes can cost you money and time. Check your fridge right now to see what food you are storing all wrong. What are the food storage mistakes you are guilty of making?

Animal Sex: How Love Dart–Shooting Snails Do It

This Valentine's Day, mischievous Cupid will be fluttering about with bow in hand, seeking out mortal hearts to pierce with his love-tinged arrows. But the winged god isn't the only one known for this kind of behavior — oddly, land snails are also known to shoot "love darts." Land snails belong to the gastropod class, which includes thousands of snail and slug species that sport a wide range of reproductive behaviors. Mating for these species typically occurs in the wetter months, said Joris Koene, a biologist at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands whose research focuses on love darts.  A Cornu aspersum snail that was hit in the head by a love-dart (arrow) so hard that the dart came out the other side of its head, next to the right eystalk.
